Isolating Switches (I.S)
- Switch-disconnectors used for isolation duty, providing a visible, lockable isolation gap upstream of equipment being maintained. They carry and withstand rated current but are not intended to make or break it, so they are always operated after the load has been switched off by a breaker or load switch.
- Fitted ahead of motors, control panels and plant items so a safe isolation can be locked off and proved before work starts. The lockable handle and the visible break are the point: an isolator that cannot be padlocked in the open position does not satisfy a permit-to-work procedure, no matter how the circuit is actually wired.
