Exit and Panic Devices EN

- Briton and CISA panic exit devices to EN 1125 for public escape routes, and emergency exit devices to EN 179 for locations where occupants are familiar with the building. The two standards are not interchangeable: EN 1125 requires a horizontal bar operable by body pressure in a crowd, EN 179 allows a lever or pad.
- EN 1125 push bars go on cinemas, malls, stadiums, schools and any route used by the public
- EN 179 lever or pad devices suit offices, plant rooms and staff-only exits. Choosing EN 179 on a public route to save cost is the classic specification error, because it assumes an occupant who knows how to operate the handle and can reach it — neither of which holds in an evacuating crowd.
