Soft starters

- Schneider Altivar soft starters — ATS01 for simple machines from 0.37 kW to 15 kW, with Altistart ATS22 and ATS480 covering larger duties. They ramp voltage on start and stop, reducing mechanical stress and extending the life of the driven machine, and a bypass contactor takes over once the motor is at speed to eliminate thyristor losses.
- Used on fixed-speed motors where the problem is the start, not the running speed: conveyors, pumps that would otherwise water-hammer the pipework, compressors, automatic doors and gates, and sites where an inrush of six to eight times full load current would dip the incoming supply. If the process actually needs variable flow rather than a gentle start, a soft starter is the wrong device and a drive is the right one.
