Variable speed drivers
- Schneider Altivar variable speed drives — ATV320 for machines and the ATV600 and ATV900 ranges for process and building services — converting the fixed supply frequency into a controlled voltage and frequency so an induction motor runs at any speed the process needs. Built-in PID control, motor protection and Modbus/BACnet communication let the drive follow a pressure or temperature setpoint directly from the BMS.
- The default control method for AHU fans, chilled water and domestic booster pumps, cooling tower fans and car park ventilation. Because fan and pump absorbed power varies with the cube of speed, trimming a fan from 100% to 80% roughly halves its energy use — which is why VSDs are usually the shortest-payback item in an HVAC energy retrofit. The trade-off is harmonics: drives inject current distortion, so on a large installation the THD assessment and any filtering belong in the design, not in commissioning.
