About

  • Reinforced limp mass vinyl barriers supplied from ½ to 2½ PSF (2.5 to 12.5 kg/m²) surface weight, adding transmission loss without adding stiffness. Being limp is the whole point, a stiff sheet of identical weight resonates and loses performance right across the speech band, which is where the complaint usually sits.

Application

Wrapped around noisy ductwork, drainage stacks and pipe risers passing through occupied areas, laid over ceilings, and built into partition cavities and equipment enclosures. Lagging a soil stack in a shaft next to a bedroom is the standard remedy for the complaint about hearing the flat above use the bathroom, the barrier goes on the pipe, not on the wall, because that is where the source is.

Standards & Reference 5 cited

  • ASTM E90

The laboratory measurement of airborne sound transmission loss: the raw data a partition's acoustic rating is derived from.

  • ASTM E413 (STC)

Sound Transmission Class: the single number that summarises an ASTM E90 measurement, used to compare partitions and doors.

  • ASTM E84

Surface burning characteristics: the flame spread index and smoke developed index a material is classified by. Class A is the usual requirement in an occupied building.

  • UL 723

The same surface burning test as ASTM E84, published by UL. A product tested to one is tested to the other.
