Fume extract fans in polypropylene, PVC and FRP, or steel with a chemical-resistant coating, with sealed shafts and spark-resistant construction to AMCA Standard 99-0401 where an ignition risk exists. Material selection follows the specific chemical, its concentration and temperature — there is no universally resistant plastic, and a wrong selection fails by embrittlement rather than by wear.

Serve laboratory fume cupboards, battery and plating rooms, water treatment and chemical dosing plant, and pharmaceutical and food process exhaust. In laboratories the fan runs continuously and discharges above roof level at a velocity high enough to clear the building's recirculation zone, so both the material and the discharge arrangement form part of the safety case, not just the fan curve.
