Damping Materials

- Constrained-layer and free-layer damping compounds, sheets and tiles applied to sheet metal to convert flexural vibration into heat. Damping targets the ringing of thin panels, which is a different physical problem from transmission through a wall and is not improved by adding mass to the panel.
- Applied to duct walls downstream of high-pressure fans, to chiller and AHU casings, transformer tanks, chutes, hoppers and machine covers. It is the correct treatment for the drumming and low-frequency rumble that appears in large flat sheet metal surfaces, where lagging alone has no measurable effect because the panel is re-radiating from behind the lagging.
